Invisalign Q & A

Why do I need to re-align my teeth?

When your teeth are misaligned, your jaw may not close properly. Complications can include:

  • Jaw problems, including TMJ
  • Problems chewing
  • Poor digestion
  • Impaired dental health
  • Impaired speech

Invisalign can put your teeth in perfect alignment if you have:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Teeth that are crowded together
  • Large gaps between your teeth
  • Teeth that cross over one another

Why is Invisalign better than traditional braces?

Traditional braces consist of metal brackets that are cemented to your teeth and then strung through with orthodontic wires that tighten gradually.

The wire’s constant force on all of your teeth at once can hurt your mouth and gums. The rough brackets rub against your inner cheeks and tongues, causing sores and abrasions. Braces stay in place for several years and can only be removed by your orthodontist.

In contrast, the Invisalign aligners:

  • Slip easily over your teeth
  • Only move a few teeth at a time for less pain and discomfort
  • Have no wires or metal parts
  • Are made of a smooth plastic that doesn’t irritate your cheeks or tongue
  • Are nearly invisible
  • Can be removed for meals and special occasions
  • Allow you to brush and floss your teeth normally
  • Come in graduated sets that you change yourself
  • Require fewer dental appointments

What is the Invisalign process like?

At your Redmond Smiles Family & Implant Dentistry Invisalign consultation, your dentist scans your teeth to create precise 3-D images. Your dentist then devises an individual treatment plan that the Invisalign laboratory uses to create a series of custom-designed Invisalign aligners that gradually move your teeth where they should be.

When you pick up your first set of aligners, you also get a copy of your treatment plan. You can keep track of the movements your teeth are making at each step of the way.

You wear the aligners for 22 hours a day. Every one to two weeks, you change to a new aligner set. You only need to see your Redmond Smiles dentist every two to three months for a progress check and to pick up your next set of aligners.
