Use It or Lose It: Maximize Your Dental Benefits Before Year-End

Use It or Lose It: Maximize Your Dental Benefits Before Year-End

We’re well into November now, and while that means that the holiday season is kicking into gear, it also signals the end of the calendar year. From a dental insurance perspective, it’s time to use benefits that don’t roll over into the new year.

It’s a use-it-or-lose-it situation, and at Redmond Smiles Family & Implant Dentistry in Redmond and Bellevue, Washington, we’d like to help you make the most of your coverage, so we’ve assembled these strategies to help you plan.

Preventive care

Your 6-month appointment may not be until early in the new year, but if you have benefits remaining for the year, consider bumping your check-up into this calendar year. Remember, though, that others will be maximizing their benefits too, so book your appointment early.

Plan major dental work

High-ticket treatments like implants or orthodontics can use up this year’s benefits, with the balance carrying over into next year. You can effectively split your costs. We may even be able to arrange a split for two-part treatments like root canals and crowns.

Deductible awareness

If you’ve met your deductible commitment for the year, then remaining covered care holds fewer out-of-pocket expenses. It may mean more time in our offices around the holidays, but the financial savings may be substantial.

Add recommended treatments

We may recommend procedures that aren’t urgent, things like non-urgent crowns, fillings, root canals, and wisdom teeth extractions. If you have room in your current-year dental benefits, now may be the time to book your appointment.

FSA and HSA funds

Flexible spending account (FSA) and health savings account (HSA) plans have year-end deadlines. When you don’t use these funds, they expire rather than carry over. Consider paying for eligible dental services using FSA or HSA benefits rather than letting these lapse.

Coordinate family coverage

If you have family members who are part of your dental care benefits, don’t forget them and their oral health, particularly when year-end funds remain.

Other year-end advice for your dental coverage

As your dental benefits roll over, it’s a great time to review your coverage. Check for changes in your policy, such as your annual maximum benefit, deductible amounts, and dental services that are covered under your plan.

Now is the time to make adjustments to your plan if you need to expand coverage. Being strategic about your dental plan can help you save money in the coming year, too.

Noncosmetic Reasons to Consider Veneers

Dental veneers are perhaps best known for their Hollywood glamor role, the first stop on the fabled path toward movie stardom. These porcelain or laminate shells do more than whiten. There is a range of noncosmetic uses, too.
